Study 001

A collection of cannons and rounds.

In 2019 I published my first piece of classical work. This was originally used as my composition portfolio in my application to Portland State University’s BM:Comp program. This project was an exploration of a traditional song form called Canons (or rounds). There are several different types of canons but the general idea is a piece of music that can be interpreted in several different ways to create a more complex piece. One example of this is the table canon which gets its name as a piece of music that should be read from opposing sides of a table by two musicians, leading to each musician harmonizing with each other. Other types of canon in this project are: Enigma, Fugue, Two in One, Three in One, Mirror, Table, and Fugue. This project eventually led to one of my first professional collaborations with incredibly talented visual artist Moira Hampson.

This work was originally dedicated to my late piano teacher, Mary Brown. Thank you for giving me the gift of music.
